Dr Nicholas Chen SC began practising at the NSW Bar in February 1998 after receiving the Academic, Civil & Legal Prize for the highest mark in the NSW Bar exams.
He practices in a range of areas including common law personal injury, building and construction, professional liability, insurance, inquiries and inquests and administrative law. He has been involved in a number of significant cases including, in the area of tort law,
- Hunter New England Health District v McKenna (2014) 253 CLR 270 (existence of duty of care owed by psychiatrist to family of deceased patient) and
- Sweeney v Boylan Nominees Pty Limited (2006) 226 CLR 161 (agency and vicarious liability in tort).
Dr Chen SC has been recognised by Doyle’s Guide as NSW Pre-eminent and Leading Insurance Barrister, Senior Counsel. He is also listed in Best Lawyers Australia 2022, for both Insurance Law and Personal Injury Litigation.
He is currently a Deputy Chair of a claims review committee of a large insurer, a Director of the Barrister’s Sickness & Accident Fund and a member of the NSW Bar Association Common Law Committee.
