Prior Experience

Dean was admitted to practice in 2006. Before coming to the Bar in 2012, he worked at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now Mallesons) in Canberra and as a Senior Associate at Henry Davis York in Sydney.

Experience at the Bar

Dean practises principally in state taxation and historical institutional abuse litigation. He regularly appears in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the NSW Court of Appeal and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

In taxation matters, Dean has extensive experience in payroll tax and duties disputes, acting for both private taxpayers and the Chief Commissioner of State Revenue. He has particular expertise in the employment agency provisions of the Payroll Tax Act 2007 (NSW), having appeared in many of the leading cases concerning their interpretation and application.

Dean also has a substantial practice in historical institutional abuse litigation, acting for institutional defendants in claims involving allegations of historical sexual and physical abuse. His work includes advising on liability and quantum and appearing in interlocutory and substantive proceedings.

Dean’s broader experience includes commercial disputes, contract, equity, negligence and statutory interpretation.
